Review Policy

I am glad to accept books for review on Under the Heather Books. Please note the following, as contacting me assumes that you have read and agreed to these terms:

  • This blog is dedicated to recognizing and promoting books written by women and authors of color, as well as trans authors and authors writing from an LGBTQ perspective. I do RARELY review books written by straight white men, but don’t count on it. This is not a matter of me being prejudiced against those authors, but rather a matter of staying true to the purpose of this blog, which is to create a space for authors with diverse identities to be acknowledged and appreciated.
  • I am always happy to hear from publishers and authors about books, but I can’t make guarantees about reviews. This blog is a project of passion, not a job.
  • I do not participate in blog tours, nor do I review self-published works (unless you make a REALLY good case).
  • I prefer print books, but e-books are accepted as well (PDF or .mobi files only) if you are unable to send a print book.
  • I will respond to all review inquiries, even if I decline to review the book.
  • I review only fiction, although the occasional nonfiction book may slip in if I think it has value for my readers.
  • I enjoy branching out of my usual genres, so if you don’t see a book in your favorite genre, suggest one!
  • I do not review Christian fiction, ever.
  • I will review short story and poetry collections, on occasion.
  • For any book I review, I will always give my honest opinion regardless of the source.
  • When you contact me, I will need the name of the book’s author and publishing house, a brief summary of the plot, a deadline for when you would like the review published (if you have one), and a statement of why you think your book is a good fit for this blog.
  • Books reviews take time and also tend to get backed up, so it’s often the case that a review is posted two months or more after a review is requested. If you’re dying to have it posted sooner, please tell me so that I can make arrangements.
  • Most of the books I review are from either the library, loaned to me by friends or family, or books I bought myself. It should be assumed everything I review was obtained in this fashion unless I expressly state otherwise within the review.
